Serena Williams

Venus Williams

Maria Sharapova

Victoria Azarenka

With the new rankings for women’s tennis that were released on Monday, many of the top players stayed in the same positions. However, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova both did incredibly well at last week’s Sony Ericsson Open, and this success showed in the new rankings.

Azarenka was formerly the number 8 player in the world, but she now sits in the 6 spot. Sharapova also broke into the top 10 for a number 9 spot after losing to Azarenka in Saturday’s tournament final. Sharapova has been out of the top ranks for some time, so this could be her chance to get back on top in the WTA.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams has now dropped out of the top 10. Neither she nor her sister, Serena, have been recently playing because of health issues. When in good playing shape, both are top competitors in women’s tennis.

After an impressive run at the Sony Ericsson Open, Andrea Petkovic of Germany has broken into the top 20 at number 19. Petkovic took out several top players on her way to the semi-finals.
