Biographr:
Mary Pierce hits the ball as hard as or harder than any other female tennis player in the world. At the 1995 Australian Open she blew away Arantxa Sánchez Vicario to win her first ever Grand Slam tennis tournament. The victory may finally make people forget the story of Pierce and her father, who abused her while trying to make her a tennis champion. In 1993 Pierce broke away from her father and found happiness--both on the court and off--for the first time by just being herself.
Mary Caroline Pierce was born on January 15, 1975, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Her parents, Jim and Yannick, met in Montreal. Yannick was a French exchange student when she met Jim, a U.S. citizen. Because of her parent's nationalities, Pierce is both a U.S. and a French citizen. The family, including Pierce's younger brother, David, eventually moved to Hollywood, Florida, where Jim Pierce worked as a custom jeweler and jewelry salesman.
